Can I have a home cake decorating business in Washington State?
I’ve always wanted to have my own business, be my own boss, work from home, etc. I’ve always loved making/decorating cakes and have been told I have a talent for it. I’ve considered starting my own at-home business, but I am concerned about legalities.
I understand that I will need to be licensed, which doesn’t really concern me. What I’m really worried about is the potential requirement for a separate, commercial kitchen with a three compartment sink and all that jazz, which pretty much destroys the entire “at-home” concept. Does such a thing as an “at-home cake business” exist, legally, in Washington state?
I’ve already been to the website of licensing and nothing explicitly answers my question. Any help on the subject would be greatly appreciated.
Some people do install the commercial kitchen with all the requirements in their homes. I don’t know of anyone who’s done it in Washington state, specifically, but I know of people who’ve done it. They had to do a lot of remodelling. Only you know whether you have the space and the finances to do this.
Have you done any cake decorating professionally? If you haven’t, I suggest that you get a job doing this. Just making the odd birthday or retirement cake is very different from doing this all day, every day, when you are not emotionally connected to the person who will be enjoying the cake. You’ll either love it and want to continue, or quit after a while and be glad that you dodged a bullet.
