How would you feel if a fresh-meat market opened in your community?
Say your community has a very high population of an ethnic group that opened a fresh-meat market. Would you understand that it is part of their culture or would you want the fresh-meat market closed down?
(Just in case you don’t know what I mean by “fresh-meat market”: They have rows and rows of LIVE chickens [and I'm sure other animals*, but all I saw on the news were the chickens] in cages. You go in, pick out the bird you want, and in 15 minutes they have it butchered, wrapped, and ready for you to take home.)
*Did a quick Google search for news on it, and found an article that says: “[Town] Halal Market is now open for business. It is a place for people to get fresh meat like poultry, rabbit and livestock.”
I think that the “end” for these animals would likely be much more humane than in assembly-line-style slaughterhouses. One person, one animal, on-demand, as opposed to thousands upon thousands per day.
That said, I would not visit it myself (I’m a vegan), but I wouldn’t deny someone else the right to pick out their dinner. Heck, it shows a lot more thought about their food, and what it is, rather than the disconnect that such a large majority of people have when they pick out “boneless chicken” neatly wrapped in plastic at the grocery store with a pretty little picture of a farm on the front.
