“hot Leads”
220V 60HZ tag on machine wire.?
If the rating on my machine says 220V 60 HZ, does that mean I can hook this up directly to a 20AMP breaker that allows for two “hot leads”?
One important detail…the wire into the press only has one black and one neutral and one ground….I guess the one black is the confusing part.
Yes. You also need to connect a ground wire to the frame of the machine. The ground wire needs to be run with the two hot wires back to the breaker box and connected to the ground there. Check the machine to see if it has a neutral connection. If it needs a neutral, that requires a 4th wire run back to the breaker box and connected to the neutral there.
I assume that you have a USA type 120/240 supply system.
Re additional details:
Where are you and where does the equipment come from? In the USA, I don’t think you will find a 240 (220) volt system that has 220 volts to a neutral. Is the equipment marked “N” or neutral or does it just have a white wire? If it is marked “N” I would think that it might come from someplace that has systems with 220 volts to a neutral. I think such places also have 50 Hz, so I would double check if this is really 60 Hz equipment. You should probably check to make sure that there is not a low resistance between neutral and ground (or black and ground for that matter). If there is not a low resistance to ground, connecting two hot 220 volt source leads to black and neutral should be fine.
I wonder about “tag on machine wire.” Is there a permanent marking on the machine or on a motor in the machine?
