young, nervous horses?
I just recently purchased a 3yr old walking horse and he is the most nervous, goofy horse i have ever met. I know all about TWH’s i have owned and handled them for years but i have never met one so nervous. The thing i need help with is his leading “problem”.
He will lead fine until you get to a gate or barn entrance then he freezes and refuses to go then starts acting nervous and walks backwards refusing pressure. How do i get him where he will walk through stuff without having to have someone constantly getting behind him to help aid his walk? I have never had to deal with a horse who will not go in and out of gates without refusing and he has never been beat or had any trauma before so its not that he is afraid. Also he does go into stalls, he has no problem with that he will walk right in, its just the pasture, round pen and walking into the barn that he has a problem with.
heres what i would do….take the horse out and work him…ride him lounge him whatever you want work him to a sweat…after your done cool him down and all and walk him up to the gate…of course he will refuse so get in front of him and just pull not to hard not to where you are using ur body weight just pull alittle whenever he gives in even the littlest tiniest bit let go of all the pressure and go up and rub him then do it again eventually he will just give in completely it might take some time and patients but it should work…
another thing that might help is if the horse has a friend or buddy that it follows alot like trail riding or anything lead both horses around for a while (him following behind the whole time) then bring them to the gate once they get to it walk the first horse through then see if he follows it just might work..
