How do you “lead” a dance partner?
Is it just putting gentle pressure on your partner’s hand and body in the direction you want it to go? Is this like some “signal” to be done say, half a beat in advance, or is it real time?
You’re on the right track, and I don’t know that there’s a really good answer to be written. Certainly you want to avoid “cranking” your partner around. But I’ve also practiced lead without use of the hands/arms as a good exercise. You dance your part, with the music, and your partner’s lag time will be so short as to be unnoticeable, nothing near so long as a half beat. I’d also suggest you ask your instructor to switch roles on occasion. Being led is sometimes a good way to figure out a lead. As for my instructor, I think she actually gets a little perverse pleasure from getting to lead me for a switch.
