If you own your own photography business please help, I am saving to open my own photography business…?
I am currently in college, majoring in digital photography. I would like to open my own “home-based” photography business. The reason I would like to start out at home is because we have this huge back room that has its own door to the outside and I can be home with my daughter. Anyhow, I do know that I will need some type of business license, insurance, equipment, (most of my equipment I already have because it was required for classes). Another concern that I have is how do I make my company name legal?
I have take photos for family and friends while in college but is it possible for me to go ahead and start my own business while in school?

I am starting a small design build business. Mostly home additions, storage sheds, detached offices, and other small jobs. I am required to have a 300,000 liabilty insurance to become a licensed contractor. I wanted to know if my insurance would cover both the design side of the work as well as the construction side or if I would need to purchase 2 different policies. Also, how much would I be looking at paying for insurance per year?
If you are truly interested in getting the insurance, you should be consulting with not only one insurance company but several. NOW is a good time to work on a business plan and include the proposals into the costs/expenses to make sure your business will see a profit. It will be a tax deduction to consult both an attorney and small business accountant to cover your assets. Make sure you know exactly what licenses you will need and their costs. This is the stage of your business where a business plan is of major importance. Your bottom line depends on it. Don’t settle for the cheapest insurance out there and check the reputation of any insurance company you choose to deal with. Find out from other small businesses, especially competitors who they use. Any Ideas for a small business this upcoming Holiday Season?
Hello everyone. Christmas is fast approaching and its the best time to start making profit and start a small business. Do you have any ideas that I can easily do as business for the holidays? I am currently employed in an IT company so I only have time to do this during the weekends.
Normal business ideas for the holidays are food like fruitcakes, brownies, candies, making personalized christmas cards, christmas decors, etc.
Maybe you have other suggestions?
Are you crafty. My sister-in-law and niece are very talented and make beaded jewelry and do very well at craft shows and holiday bazaars. In the past they handmade Christmas decorations–Mr. and Mrs. Santa candle holders out of wood that they decorated and painted (very artistic–but not me), a Rudolph cut out of wood where the body, legs,antlers were all separate like a puzzle so it could be stored easily). I don’t know if they sent away for catalogs or what. So if you have a passion that you can channel into something unusual that the public will buy, I say go for it. I know my relatives didn’t have much money invested in their little enterprises.

Why would someone start their own business instead of franchise?
Why I ask this question…Well because I am planning a business in restaurant like sports bar and grill type. Well would it be better to franchise from another business that is simular or start your own from scratch. Also what about cost. Would the cost of starting your own be simular for a franchise.
You have to pay for the franchise and undergo quite a bit of scrutiny from that chain. They will do quite a bit of checking before allowing you to purchase a franchise and want to know how much money is in your wallet.
Unless you are the only one in town a restaurant is not a thing to be considering right now anyway.

I need a mentor to help me in making decisions for a small business venture.?
I have a dream/idea for a small business venture. I just need some mentoring on how/what to do & the best way to make it work for me. I am esp interested in knowing if ebay is the best place to start or if I should have my own website as well.
With all due respect, SCORE consists of retired business executives, which is a pretty shallow pool when it comes to marketing advice for an online business. They do very well in advising how to set up a “bricks & mortar” business but I don’t know how much help they would give you on an online business.
The biggest issues you face are:
(1) Developing a web site, the graphics, copy and layout, etc. Do you have any knowledge in web design, and/or access to Front Page or some other development software? If not, start on Ebay and Amazon.
(2) If you do your own site, you will need a shopping cart, or at least be able to use Google checkout or ebay, both of which require a checking account and/or credit card. That’s another reason to start out using ebay.
Eventually you’ll want your own website but for now I would start by learning ebay and maybe Amazon. Those are also inexpensive ways to test your product idea to make sure it’s a good idea before you start spending a lot of money on your own web site. Good luck!

In business relationships, is it more appropriate to address someone by their first name or last name?
Whenever I go to a dealership they say my first name every 5 seconds. When I call a customer service line they say my last name nearly as often and mispronounce it, in some cases so severely it makes me cringe.
I work in Business-to-Business sales and am on the phone all day spending the majority of my time on the phone cold calling.
I’m really on the fence about this. Please help!

In business, generally when you are dealing with someone you don’t know (especially on the phone and it is not face to face and the first time you’ve contacted them), you should use their title and surname until you reach a point in the relationship where you might ask “Can I call you Jim?” If you are dealing with someone on a regular basis, then you should try and establish a first name relationship. If someone mispronounces your name, it’s OK to politely correct them as in “Actually my name is pronounced _____.”
